Phone No: 044-28279898 and 28222212. ----- The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is offering a Foundation Programme in Company Secretaryship course and has called for applications for admission beginning next June. The eligibility for admission to the CS Foundation Programme is 10+2 or equivalent of any stream except fine arts and the course fee is Rs.3,600. Subjects to be taught to students pursuing this programme would be English and Business Communication, Ec onomics and Statistics, Financial Accounting, Elements of Business Laws and Management. (Applicants belonging to SC/ST and physically handicapped category have to pay only half of the prescribed fees for other students.) The last date to apply is September 30. According to T. Raja of ICSI Madurai Chapter, the Company Secretaryship course can be pursued in the distance learning mode. A student is required to successfully complete the coaching to become eligible for appearing in the examination. The students also have the option of attending oral coaching classes organised by the institute at select places through its Regional Councils, chapters and accredited centres, on payment of extra fee, he said. Explaining the importance of a Company Secretary, the institute's admission announcement says that he or she is the vital link between the company and Board of Directors, shareholders, government and other agencies. After completing the CS Foundation Programme, the candidate can proceed to do the Executive Programme. Commerce graduates and non-commerce graduates can join the executive programme directly in which they will be taught general and commercial laws, company accounts, cost and management accounting, tax laws, company law, economic and labour laws and securities laws and compliances. Upon successfully completing the Executive Programme, the candidates will proceed to the CS Professional Programme which covers subjects such as financial, treasury and forex management, corporate restructuring and insolvency, advanced taw laws, governance, business ethics and sustainability. A qualified Company Secretary has openings in the job market or can practise as an independent professional. All companies seeking to list on the stock exchange are required to appoint a whole-time company secretary.
