Installing Java AccessBridge will help to some extent and I would also suggest you try the new Jaws 11 beta. You wouldn't still get any style or formatting information though. Some people claim to have more success with NVDA but I have no idea.
If you have to use OpenOffice for business/work purposes, I suggest the Sun ODF plugin for Microsoft Office which lets you open, edit and save all types of OpenOffice file formats through MS Office.
