Beyo CBS Reader Documentation Thank you for trying the Beyo CBS Reader. You now have the ability to read the printed word efficiently, on the go, with the use of your mobile phone. Please read this document, as it gives useful information on how to get the best out of the Beyo CBS Reader. 1 Requirements There are several ways to install Beyo CBS Reader, referred to from here on as The Reader, using Bluetooth, Infrared, direct download via the phone, and Nokia PC Suite. We will concentrate on the Nokia PC Suite method as this seems to be the most reliable. Before installing, please make sure that the date is correct on the phone, otherwise the 14 day trial version will not function correctly, and the software may in some instances not even install. Note that phones supported include Symbian 3rd Edition phones that include Feature Pack 1 and 2 of the operating system. Note also that changing the date after installing the demo will cause it no longer to run. Download and install the Nokia PC Suite from http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite to your computer. Next, you need to know which version of The Reader you need for your phone. Some phones run Symbian 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1, referred to as FP1, and some run Feature Pack 2, FP2. FP1 phones include the Nokia E66, E71, E90, N82, N95 and N95-8GB. FP2 phones include the Nokia N85, N86 and N96. Note these lists are not exhaustive, but are just representative of a few of the phones that run each feature pack. If in doubt, please contact us. (See Section 6 for contact information. Select the correct installer and you are ready to install. ? 2 Installation Plug in the phone to the PC using the supplied USB cable. The phone should come up with a screen asking by which method you wish to connect. Select PC Suite and press OK. Select the installation file you chose in the previous section on the computer, then either double click or press enter to open it. Nokia PC Suite will ask if you wish to install the application. Select Yes. Finally, follow the prompts on the phone screen to complete the installation. Note that if the phone asks where you wish to install the software, phone memory, mass memory or memory card, it is safe to install to any location. 3 Starting The Reader Note: Before you attempt to open the reader, please be sure that the camera switch on the phone is open. Go to the phone’s main menu, and The Reader can usually be found in the Applications folder of the phone. If it is not there, look in the My Own folder. Once you have located it, open The Reader. You will now be asked if you wish to update purchasing options? Please select yes, otherwise the reader will not run. This will require an access point to be configured on your phone in order to connect to the licence server. Once this update is successful, you will either be able to enter a code, or select 14 day trial. The 14 day trial is fully functional, without limitation, until it expires. When it does, you will be asked again to enter a code, which will be supplied to you upon purchasing the product. ? 4 Reading your first document At this point, the reader should be running, and the viewfinder on the camera should come on after a few seconds, and provided there is enough light, you should hear a series of beeps. The phone should be held landscape by default, that is, hold the phone going left to right across a page that is printed in portrait or from top to bottom if the page is printed landscape. Note also that because the camera defaults to the landscape setting, the behaviour of the arrow keys are such that what we usually refer to as left and right, become up and down. The right being up arrow, and the left being down arrow. The regular up/down arrows become left and right. This is easy to understand if you hold the phone with both hands at the top and bottom of the phone. Place the phone on the page as centrally as possible, then start to raise the phone. Ideally, you should be about 10 inches above the page for an A4 page, and if the scanning area is smaller, you need to be closer. As you raise the phone, the series of beeps get higher and lower. The higher the beeps, the more in focus you are. That is, the ideal position is when the beeps are constantly at a high pitch. When the beeps are constant for a few seconds, the phone will then stop beeping, and wait for three seconds by default. Then a picture will automatically be taken. Keep the phone as still as possible in the same position, until you hear the second of two very high beeps. The first tells you that shooting is in progress and the second that the picture is being taken. Wait for a second or two after the second high beep and it is safe to move the phone. Finally, after a few seconds, the page should be read to you in a clear English voice. Once it has finished, you will be able to read the output using the arrow keys with your access software. Again, bear in mind that the arrows are reversed. If for any reason, there is not enough light for auto shooting to engage, you will hear no beeps at all. In this instance, you can simply rais the phone over the page and using guesswork, take a picture by pressing the Select key, or you can turn a light on in the room, which should engage auto shooting once more. Congratulations! You have read your first document. To read another page, press the Back key, and position the phone for the next picture. ? 5 Settings In order to change any of the settings, you need to select Options, Settings. Once there, each setting can be accessed using the arrow keys. Press Select on the setting you wish to change. When you have applied all your settings, press Accept. If you don’t wish to change settings after all, press Cancel. The settings will be described below. 5.1 Auto Shoot The Auto Shoot setting determines how much time the reader will take once in focus, to take the picture. The options are 1.5 Seconds, 3 Seconds, 5 Seconds and off. When set to Off, auto shooting will not engage at all, and you will have to take the picture manually, by pressing the select key. The default is 3 Seconds. 5.2 Portrait Landscape Setting this to Portrait means that you need to hold the phone in the reverse way, in other words, if the print is portrait, you need to hold the phone top to bottom of the page. Note this does not currently change the behaviour of the arrow keys. The default is Landscape. 5.3 Flashlight The Flashlight can be set to Auto, Off and On. Auto means that the system tries to determine if there is enough light, and if not, engages the flash. On is always on, and Off is always off. Default is Auto. 5.4 Volume This setting controls the volume of the Text To Speech. There are 10 levels, 1 being quietest and 10 loudest. Default is 5. 5.5 Speed This setting controls the speed of the text to speech. There are three settings, Slow, Normal and Fast.
