I learnt from a GPS (receiver) maker that latest systems are accurate to
about five metres, but the ones I'm talking about are probably applied
for enterprise activities. GPS technology uses the process called
tri-angulation to locate and object on the ground.

There will always be error in using GPS navigational systems since it
determines the location based on wide variety of factors. For that
matter, even WF is not accurate either. However you can reach a given
location within the range of 100-150 Meeters and that's the greatest
improvements in terms of navigational technology. Paid GPS products
like WF etc update their maps constently and henceforth they are more
accurate then open source maps like Google. However, Google maps and
other similar systems are constently improving and Loadstone
henceforth uses Google maps as the source. Moreover, GPS locations are
obtained from 24 satelites that are located outside India and
henceforth obtaining maps in that context is nothing to do with local
governments.
