Has sent proposal for starting Centre for Disability Studies

Showcasing talent: Differently abled children staging a cultural performance at
the Pondicherry University on Saturday.
PUDUCHERRY: The Pondicherry University is awaiting reply from the University
Grants Commission (UGC) on its proposal for starting a Centre for Disability
Studies. If approved, the university will take up research in the area of
disability studies.
Coordinator of the Department of Social Work at the university G. Ramathirtham
said that the university had submitted the proposal to the UGC about three
months ago.
"If the UGC gives the nod, the centre will carry out research studies. If
possible, it will also offer postgraduate courses in disability studies," he
said.
Ability Nite - 2010
The department organised World Social Work Day celebrations and Ability Nite -
2010 on Saturday.
Chairperson of the Centre for Disability Studies, Tata Institute of Social
Sciences, Mumbai, Srilatha Juvva, participated.
A placement brochure was released at the celebrations.
The theme of this year's World Social Work Day, as decided by the International
Federation of Social Workers, was 'Social work and social development,'
according to a press release.
As many as 18 non-governmental organisations participated in the celebrations.
A cultural night for persons with disabilities was held on the occasion.
It was to assess such persons' potential and help them become self-reliant, the
release said.
About 110 differently abled children from eight non-governmental organisations
and special schools staged cultural programmes, including song, dance, karate
and yoga demonstration.
