Dear Himalya, the article seems really interesting, and, even exiting to some extent. However, we would love if you'll please make some clarifications about it:-- It begins with the line: "Motorola Milestone comes with lifetime free access to voice-guided street-level maps of 401 cities in India" and further goes on to tell that Indian travelers can visit patrol pumps, eateries, hospitals and religious/tourist places with its help. and later on it says that it still has not been launched in India.
Anyhow, congrats for a great piece of research.
Best Regards.
        Sincerely yours, Yogesh Sharma.

open the property of my computer. press ctrl tab until you reach hardware
tab. press tab to go to device manager. activate the button with space bar.
maximise the window and press tab once. press d until you reach display
adapter. if it is closed press right arrow to open it. press down once and here you will get the exact name of your display adapter. if it is installed
correctly with the installation CD, the chipset would also be same. to
confirm this press n until you reach network adapters. if it is closed press
right to open. press down, one of your network adapter component would be
almost same what you found in display adapter items.

hope this will help.

Civil services test in for a revamp

Civil Services Aptitude Test is being mooted at the preliminary level from 2011 and the UPSC is expected to push for changes in the Main examination too

Time for change:The proposed pattern will comprise questions which would test the problem solving, analytical, logical reasoning and decision-making skills
of the aspirants.

Those aspiring to be civil servants must have not only the required skills and knowledge, but also the right values which would include integrity, commitment to public service and above all, commitment to the ideals and philosophy embodied in the Constitution.

So a number of committees and commissions were setup to make recommendations on various aspects of recruitment. The first committee was the Macaulay committee of 1854. This committee established the principle of 'transferability of academic talent to administration.' The Macaulay system continued till three decades
after Independence.

In 1976, the Kothari committee recommended a sequential system of examination based on the dictum that "the average quality would get richer as the stream proceeds from one 'stage to the next'. Accordingly the examination was designed as a sequential three stage process - an objective type Preliminary examination comprising one Optional and General Studies, a Main examination which would comprise 9 written papers and finally a Personality Test.

In 1989, Satish Chandra Committee was appointed to suggest reforms and it recommended minor changes to Kothari model. Accordingly, an 'Essay' paper was introduced and the marks for the Interview were enhanced. Presently, the Civil Services Examination is conducted on an annual basis on this pattern.

The new millennium demanded excellence at every level of governance which required almost total re-shaping, re-structuring of the economic as well as the administrative apparatus of the government. Responding to this need, the Y.K. Alagh Committee, in 2001, recommended significant changes.

At the Preliminary level, it suggested that the 'optional' subject should be continued but the General Studies paper should be recast to that of a Civil Services Aptitude Test comprising questions on basic awareness', 'problem solving and analytical abilities' ( situation from the civil services arena to be taken to test reasoning and understanding of problems ) and 'data analysis ability'.

In order to establish a level playing field it recommended that the optionals at the Main examination be replaced by four compulsory papers - Sustainable Development and Social justice, Science and Technology in Society, Democratic governance, Public Systems and Human Rights. The Second Administrative Reforms (Veerappa Moily) Commission in its report in 2008 upheld the recommendations of the Alagh Committee and made a few more significant suggestions.

The first step in this direction is its proposal to introduce a Civil Services Aptitude Test at the Preliminary level from the year 2011.

The Preliminary examination is expected to be re-modelled in either of the following formats:

Format-I : In this format, following the Alagh committee recommendations the Preliminary examination may comprise the following two objective type papers - the Optional Subject (300 marks) and Civil Services Aptitude Test (200 marks).

Format-II : In this format, following the recommendations of 'P.S. Bhatnagar' the Preliminary examination may comprise the following two objective type papers - Civil Services Aptitude Test (300 marks) and General Studies (300 marks).

The Union Public Service Commission may choose any of the above formats and a notification may be expected by May-June this year. Whatever the format, the
Civil Services Aptitude Test appears to be on the anvil.

Likely pattern of a Civil Services Aptitude Test

It would comprise questions which would test the 'problem solving', 'analytical', 'logical reasoning' and 'decision-making skills' of the aspirant. To ensure that these questions are relevant they would necessarily be from the arena of civil services with an underlying essence of Public Administration in practice.

The UPSC is expected to push for changes at the level of the Main examination too. It is seriously examining the proposal of including compulsory papers exclusively from the domain of humanities based on the French Model of examination. The compulsory papers that are expected to be introduced are : ? Sustainable Development and Social Justice; ?Democratic Governance, Public Systems and Human Rights; ? Indian Constitution with an emphasis on Indian Legal System including Administrative Law; ? Economic Theory and Indian Economic System; ?Administrative Theories and Organisational Behaviour and ? Indian Administrative
System. However, these changes are not expected in the near future.

Changes

The news of any change is an unnerving moment for any long term serious aspirant. However, if one is mentally prepared, the transition becomes easier. Given below are a few broad guidelines to help the prospective aspirant to prepare for the examination :

1. First and foremost, there is only a proposal for a change in 'principle'. The change is to be debated and accepted. The UPSC has to formally declare the new pattern. Till then, all aspirants should continue with the old pattern.

2. As the questions would be from the arena of the civil services, all aspirants irrespective of their background should try to understand the philosophy behind the Constitution, its ideals, its principles and its focus on development. Having understood the constitutional framework they should comprehend
the position of the civil services in the relevant context.

3. Having acquired basic knowledge within the given parameters, the next step would be to understand the logic behind every provision. Till now, what was
tested was the 'what', now what would be tested will be the 'why'.

4. The mode of preparation should change from the 'descriptive' mode to the 'explanatory' mode.

Having established a base for developing reasoning and problem solving skills, the prospective aspirant can 'hone' them at the appropriate juncture.

Subject: [AI] Dragon Dictation (review): A free app for the iPhone
that converts speech to text
Message-ID:

Reviewed by Prasad Naik.

Converts spoken words into text Very poor voice detection, no option to
directly send text to other applications without copying to clipboard
first.

Dragon Dictation is a free speech to text converter for the iPhone. It
has been developed by Nuance, the same people who are responsible for
making the PC software - Dragon Naturally Speaking.

The purpose of the iPhone app is simple; Instead of typing, you open the
application and then press the record button. You then speak clearly
what you want to be converted into text. The application then uploads
your voice file on to their servers using either GPRS/EDGE, 3G or Wi-Fi
connection. The servers then convert the voice into text, which is then
sent to your device. You then copy the text to your clipboard using the
copy-paste function that was debuted in iPhone OS 3.0 and use it
elsewhere, such as in your Twitter or Facebook application. You can even
send it as an SMS from the application itself.

What sounds great on paper however turned out to be really bad when it
came to practical usage. The application is probably tuned for American
accents (or maybe robots, I'm not sure), but when it cam to recognizing
voices of us Indian humans the applications failed spectacularly. Unless
you speak painfully slow and enunciate each and every word as clearly as
possible using simple, uncomplicated words, the application would just
give back random text.

I also let others use the application to see if it was just my voice
that the application had problem recognizing. But the app failed to work
well with others as well. Also, note that none of the people who used it
had a pronounced accent, which means, if you have one don't even bother
using this app. The accuracy of the application goes down even further
in noisy environments.

The application has a built-in keyboard, so if there are a couple of
mistakes in the converted text you can correct them with it.
Unfortunately, the text that we got was usually so wrong that it was
better to just go to the respective application where we were going to
paste the text and type there instead.

A feature in application uploads all your contacts on to Nuance's
servers. So when you say a name that is in your phonebook, it is easier
for the application to convert it into text. The voice files that you
upload also remain with Nuance, which they use to further refine the
applications conversion process. All your contacts and voice messages
are secure with them though and according to Nuance, "all data is stored
in secure data centers according to stringent privacy and security
standards".

Even if your text does come out accurately, there is the hassle of
copying the text to your clipboard on the iPhone and then pasting it in
the application you want. There should have been a way to directly
upload the text to these services through the Dictation app itself.

Overall, unless the applications improves by leaps and bounds and
manages to convert at least 99% of what is spoken to text, and has the
ability to send out messages to different social networking sites from
within its interface, I don't think I would ever use this applications.
In its current state the applications is just plain bad. The one star
rating that I've given here is actually for the laughs that the
application generated in the office by displaying utterly hilarious text
messages that bore no resemblance to what we had said.

Also, even if the app manages to do all that I've stated above, I don't
think I would use it anyway because I am not comfortable speaking out
messages to my phone in front others (or even when I'm alone). Typing is
still the best option for me.

It is never going to happen.
Caption from the article:

"Technology matters: George Abraham with his computer and mobile phone, specially made for the blind.Pradeep Gaur/M"

Now, when a author of such an article also thinks that computer and mobile phone are specially made for blind, then mindset that accessibility is primarily meant to cater to varying degrees of ability including total absence of some abilities, is remotely thought of by common persons.

And, let us accept that world operates on a surfacical level, and humans prefer the shortest way of accomplishing anything. Visual sense is a dynamic and very brief. So, accessibility would be properly introduced, if and only if, it makes financial sense to business operators and not otherwise. If we can make it happen, fine, or else term it merely a social service and those socially minded would indulge in it. My statements are bitter, but an impartial thought is required and not emotional rebuttal, which I would not take.

The Moto Droid was launched in USA last year with Google Turn-by-Turn
navigation<http://www.fonearena.com/blog/2009/10/28/google-adds-turn-by-turn-navigation-releases-maps-navigation-for-android-2-0.html>,
it?s not available in India as of now. But Motorola has joined hands
with
local maps company MapMyIndia to offer lifetime free access to fully
voice-guided street-level navigable maps of 401 cities in India

This offers voice-guided navigation and routing in the cities and across
major national and state highways. With this the Indian consumer can drive
to 400,000 towns and villages and explore over one million points of
interest like budget/premium hotels, petrol pumps, eating joints, ATMs,
hospitals as well as tourist and religious spots. All the consumer needs to
do is to launch ?India? maps from the MOTONAV application to enjoy an
unparalleled navigation experience. The GPS navigation service is free with
no activation or data charges, independent of mobile networks and can be
used even without inserting the SIM card, as the maps are fully loaded on
the MILESTONE

It sounds really cool and would have been cool if Moto bundled the phone
with a Car holder.

hello everyone,

During days, when I had been busy with exams, some of you folks have
sent me messages and asked their computer related doubts.
Folks, I?m grateful that you guys find me eligible to answer your
queries, trust me, I love to solve your problems/doubts if I can. Just
keep directing your queries to me like this if you find me eligible
enough, I?ll try to impart my suggestions based on a little of my
knowledge and experience.
Anyways,
One of the questions which has come pretty repetitively was ?what?s
the difference between a netbook and a notebook??.
Actually, the words, languages, way and style of asking was different,
but a lot of people here, or elsewhere have asked me the same.
So, what?s the deal about it?

Well, while answering the same question to a mate just now, I thought
to write this, since I?m a little free today, and waiting for days to
arrive for some major project undertakings.

So, the terms, ?laptop?, ?notebook? and ?netbook? does often confuse
generally particularly if you?re not much in the technology shoes.
What is what, and which one to buy are some of the major doubts people
find themselves tucked in.
Considering, here?s my take on them, which may (may not be though)
help you out in understanding them better and perhaps in the future
course help you determining which is the best for you to buy.

First off, as a matter of fact, they all are smaller in size from your
colossal looking desktop.
and, the ?netbook? breed out of them is the smallest from everything
else mentioned.

Ok, so without much ado, let?s have a quick look on laptop, notebook,
and netbook in terms of differences, advantages and disadvantages.

Laptop computers:
Originally, the laptop computer were not the laptop computers at all.
Though the idea behind them was to make a device that can fit on lap
and is portable to carry around, but they were way too bulky to be
used on anyone's lap.
Those who are long been connected through technoworld will give you
lot of such examples like Commodore SX-64 and IBM "Green Machine? etc.
So, they were not exactly the laptops, and in fact, their prize to was
pretty much (I still need some months of my salary with overtime to
buy that).

Notebook:
The makers of technology don?t make it for inconvenience, and they
often want people to use and appreciate it.
Since it wasn?t much happening in the case of laptops considering it?s
yet big size and costly appearance, companies have started scratching
their heads to make it even more smaller.
Laptop computers eventually progressed to the point where they could
actually be held on your lap. By that time, they started calling them
"notebook computers", presumably because they opened like notebooks if
you turned them sideways. Some people still call them laptop computers
and they're not wrong in doing so.

Netbook:
And, then came the netbooks, from a perspective of confusing people
even more. (not actually though).

The netbooks are even smaller then notebook and can even fit in your
small Tiffin bag.
They're basically the same thing as notebook computers, scaled down
and focusing on Internet-based applications over locally-based client
applications.

Ok, so as the time passed, the size has dwindled, but is the size only
factor?
Not really.

First, have a look of a tipicle notebook and it?s configuration:

? Screen size : 12 Inch and up
? Processor : Intel Pentium Dual-Core,Core 2 Duo or AMD Turion X2
? Graphics : Integrated or External Graphic Card, from Intel GMA x3100
to AMD Mobility HD 3870X2
? Weight : 1.9kg and up.

And, now a quick compare with netbook:
? Screen size : 12 Inch max
? Processor : VIA C7 1.2GHz, Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz or AMD Geode 800MHz
? Graphics : Integrated Graphic Card, mostly Intel GMA 900 or 950
? Weight : 1.1kg and below.

So, there are four important points as you can see:
Screen size: I think this we?ve already kind of discussed.

Processor:
This part is most important.
The notebook uses Intel Pentium Dual-Core,Core 2 Duo or AMD Turion X2
as processor, while the netbook uses VIA C7 1.2GHz, Intel Atom N270
1.6GHz or AMD Geode 800MHz.
The processor of a netbook is much lesser then the processor of
notebook, and would not be able to perform high speed computing,
graphic/video editing on multiple channels, or working simultaneously
on various applications.

Graphics and weight:
Notebook supports better graphic cards then netbook, therefore it is
capable in doing high definition graphic editing, viewing of high
definition multi channel videos and so on. Which isn?t possible in
netbooks.
As per weight, here, the netbook wins the bettle.
As you can see, netbooks in comparison are pretty light in weight then
the notebooks.

So, which is better?

>From the outset it looks like netbooks don?t have much features/power,
so they aren?t good to buy, but wait.

The concept of netbook wasn?t really to provide users facilities of
high definition graphic editing, multiple channel video viewing and so
on.
It was all designed for basic users, who more prefer to do their work
on internet rather locally.
Oh, and as there is a saying in we IT people, ?web brouzer is the new
laptop?.
Ah, not to worry, it can very well run all your other basic
applications like MS word, excel, media players and others.

Netbooks are more then half in prize of notebooks, and then having
better portability.
If you are a basic user and not required to handle very heavy
softwares and applications, you should go for a netbook, as it seems
to be the best option for you.

Of course, if you?re uses are higher and you need to work on hulking
softwares/applications, then netbook isn?t made for you.

Buying a notebook or netbook therefore depends on the amount of works
you?d be doing with it, but one requires to give a fair thought and
consideration before coming to any conclusion on what to buy, whether
a netbook, or notebook.
