Hi Vicky,
Thanks for your mail, but the keystrokes that you mentioned are used
in Jaws 10 and below. In jaws 11, these are changed.
On 5/27/10, Vicky Singh <[email protected]> wrote:
Hey,
recently there was an email query regarding reading column heading in
MS Excel. The query was regarding some JAWS settings. I am unable to
answer the query but can provide a solution for reading column
headings.
This is an extract from Stafee bleaks website :
Alt 1 through 4.
This keystroke will read cells located in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
rows of the current column. this is useful if you want to glance up
and see what is in those cells (usually titles).
Alt Ctrl, 1 through 4.
These keystrokes will read the cells in the first 4 columns of the
current
row.
Alt, Ctrl, Shift, C.
Set column titles to row range.
Move to the row within the table where the column titles are located
and use the above keystroke command.
This will set the column title association to each cell within the
table and will allow JAWS to automatically speak the title of the cell
while you navigate the table.
This will, of course, offer valuable contextual reference to each cell
especially with larger, more complex tables.
Note: Yes, this keystroke consists of 4 keys. Hold down the Alt, Ctrl
and Shift keys and tap the letter C.
Note: You will want to use this keystroke when you encounter a table
where the title row is located below the 4th row.
Alt, Ctrl, Shift, R.
Set row titles to column range.
Move to the column within the table where the row titles are located
and use the above keystroke command.
This will set the row title association to each cell within the table
and will allow JAWS to speak the title of the cell while you navigate
the table.
This will, of course, offer valuable contextual reference to each cell.
Note: A very useful trick is to move to the cell that intercects both
the row and column titles and then perform both the Ctrl Alt Shift R,
and Ctrl Alt Shift C keystrokes.
This will allow JAWS to speak the row and column titles as you
navigate through the table.
Hope that helps

Dear Sir,
Thanks for this alternative.
Sometimes people capitalise the first letter of the words, though it
is not needed. The spell check command doesn?t show such kind of
errors. If there is any way to check this, could you please include it
in the presentation?
With warm regards,

A bit of a bad news... Due to technical glitches, mostly from my end, it
looks like live presentation is difficult. As an alternative, we have
decided to post a pre-recorded version on Prateek's site (most likely

Those who have questions can send them to me and probably I can do one
more recording to answer all of them. Hope this is a satisfying
compromise. Appologies for not being able to fulfil the promise of a
webcaste. We shall do this in future.

The next step in telephony
Ajai Sreevatsan and Shyam Ranganathan
3G phone allows simultaneous use of speech and data services
CHENNAI: If a mobile phone is an integral part of your identity, all the
recent talk about 3G might have left you a bit lost and confused. The
government has earned windfall revenue from the recent 3G spectrum
auction, but what does the acronym mean to users hooked to their mobile
device?
3G or 3rd Generation is the next step in the evolution of mobile telephony
standards. A mobile phone is essentially an extremely sophisticated radio
(one which can send and receive a voice message overlapped on top of a
carrier signal), and wireless telephony has come a long way since
Marconi's first successful trans-Atlantic radio-telegraph message in 1902.
"The significant difference in the functionality offered by a 3G phone is
that it allows simultaneous use of speech and data services," says Bhaskar
Ramamurthi, head of the Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology
(CEWiT), IIT-Madras.
Packet Switching
The 3G phone uses a method of data transmission technology called Packet
Switching. Data is split into packets that have a unique address. Data can
be sent on any path in a network and recombined and inter-connected. Thus
data will be transmitted faster than voice calls, though both are routed
through the same virtual band of frequencies called the spectrum.
The higher data rate, however, comes at a cost. During the recent spectrum
auctions, 5MHz slots were allotted to various telecom players.
Imagine the 2G GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) standard of
31 carriers of 200KHz to be 31 cycle tracks, says Dr. Ramamurthi, "then
the 5MHz 3G spectrum split into four 1.25MHz carrier pathways (as per
International Telecommunication Union standards) can be viewed as a
highway with traffic in both directions. Voice and data can be
accommodated in the same channel, as the carrying capacity is greater.
Data transfer rates can go up to several Mbps."
Services like video calling and on-demand TV essentially tap into this
extra space in the air waves. The amount of bandwidth required to explore
the full potential of 3G could be as much as 15-20 MHz, a 500-fold
increase in the amount of bandwidth required.
The widened spectrum means that an upgrade of both the handset (due to the
requirement for a baseband chipset architecture that supports the 3G
cellular modem) and the air interfaces of the existing cellular network is
required. The dominant 3G air interface technologies are W-CDMA (Wideband
Code Division Multiple Access) and CDMA200, which are 'revolutionary'
upgrades of GSM and CDMA.
As devices get upgraded, 3G will be at the convergence of computing,
communications and consumer devices.
"How many are going to upgrade their handset just to get 3G services" asks
J. Shivkumar, Chief Technology Officer of Wi5, a wireless solutions
provider. "It is going to be a premium service and will be available only
in high density zones like Central Business Districts. Data access speeds
will drop outside these zones. In other locations, coverage will be
available, but not the required bandwidth to offer fast data access." A
mobile voice call typically consumes only 6-13 kbps.
Pointing out that data usage revenue has already overtaken voice revenue
in the U.S., A. Subramanian, Chief General Manager, BSNL Chennai, says:
"The focus is now going to be on getting more customers into 2.5G services
such as GPRS and EDGE through cheaper rates. Most of the existing handsets
can handle GPRS. Once initiated to data services, customers will tend to
shift to 3G for better access speeds."

Small devices that run on button cell batteries can be equipped with

'Next generation watches will act as hubs of information and interact with

_________________________________________________________________________________
KOCHI: The availability of a new, low-energy consuming avatar of
Bluetooth, the technology that facilitates short-range wireless
communication between devices, will soon pave the way for its use in a
whole new range of devices, say experts.
The Bluetooth technology is now commonly used in mobile phones, computers
and many other devices.
There are three versions of this technology - the classic one that is used
in a wide range of consumer devices; the Bluetooth high speed technology
which is used for transfer of videos, music and photos between devices;
and the low-energy technology.
In recent weeks, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has released
more information about its forthcoming Bluetooth Core Specification
Version 4.0, the highlight of which is low-energy technology.
Thanks to this technology, small devices that run on button cell
batteries - the small coin-like batteries used in watches, for instance -
can be equipped with Bluetooth. This means that small devices which
receive data through various sensors will be able to transmit it real time
to nearby gadgets like a mobile phone, laptop or computer and even a
watch.
For instance, the 'next generation' watches will act as hubs of such
information and interact with other devices, say the promoters of this
technology.
So a range of button-cell powered gadgets connected with automotive and
automation home entertainment, security, fitness and sports and mobile
health will come enabled with this technology.
Executive director of the Bluetooth SIG Mike Foley told The Hindu , "I
believe that 'hub'-type devices [mobile phones, personal computers, and
television sets] will quickly include the low energy feature of the v4.0
specification. This is because the design of low energy makes this a
simple hardware upgrade to existing design."
What are the challenges the manufacturers face in deploying the new
technology?
"The chipset is designed to be a replacement for an existing Bluetooth
module allowing the antenna and other components in a design to be reused.
However, to take advantage of the new use cases, additional software must
be created, tested and deployed. Thus, some work needs to be done to take
advantage of the new capabilities supported," Mr. Foley said.
In the home environment, information provided by sensors could probably
make it easier to track happenings and trigger activities - in the
kitchen, for instance.
In automobiles, such sensors could keep track of parameters like tyre
pressure and alert the driver when there is need for attention.

Hi,
Here's the mail that was sent by Mr. Amiyo Biswas:
If you install Hindi from XP cd, you can use Hindi Mangal font. It's
the default font for XP Hindi. Here are the instructions for
installing Hindi extracted
from the Safa programme of NAB Delhi:
5.1 Installing complex script for Indian languages
Step1: Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options >
Languages tab and check "Install files for complex script and
right-to-left languages (including
Thai)" checkbox. This may require Windows OS Installation CD.
Step 2: Follow the on screen instruction to let windows copy all the
necessary files.
5.2 Extending support of advanced text services to all programs
To use advanced text services in notepad and other applications that
do not normally support them, you should change some language
options. To do this follow
the instructions given below.
Step 1: Go to "Regional and language Options" section from control panel.
Step 2: Go to "Languages" tab, then navigate and activate "Details"
button.
Step 3: In the resulting dialog box of "Text Services and Input
Languages" Go to the "Advanced" tab.
Step 4: Check "Extend support of advanced text services to all
programs" check box.
Step 5: Activate "Apply", and close all control panel windows.
5.3 Enabling input for Indian languages
After Indic language support has been added, the need is to enable
input for Indian regional language. An example is given below to
enable input for Hindi
language. Same steps can be followed to enable input for other Indian
regional languages.
Step 1: Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Languages
tab.
Step 2: In the resulting dialog move to and activate "Details" button.
Step 3: In the resulting dialog of "Text Services and Input
Languages" move to and activate "Add" button.
Step 4: In the resulting dialog of "Add Input Language", select
"Hindi" in "Input language" combo box.
Step 5: Check "Keyboard layout/IME" check box and select Devanagari
-INSCRIPT as input method in the next combo box.
Step 6: Now tab to "Ok" button and activate the button, repeat the
step to close all the control panel windows.
5.4 Adding keyboard for an input language
After enabling support for an input language you can add keyboard
layouts by following the steps given below:
Step 1: Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Languages
tab.
Step 2: In the dialog box press enter on Details button. A new dialog
box of "Text Services and Input Languages" will appear.
Step 3: Press tab once to go to Installed services tree view and
select the input language for which you want to add a keyboard layout.
Step 4: Now press tab once to go to "Add" button and press enter to
activate it. This will launch "Add Input Language" dialog box.
Step 5: In the dialog, the input language combo box will have the
input language which you selected in the previous step. If the
language in this combo
box is different then select your desired language.
Step 6: Press tab once and make sure that the "Keyboard layout/IME"
checkbox is checked. If not then check it by pressing space bar.
Step 7: Now select the desired keyboard layout from the next combo
box which you want to add for the selected input language.
Step 8: Tab to Ok button and activate it. Repeat the step to close
all open window of control panel.
5.5 Switching between different input languages and keyboard
To switch between input languages use left Alt + left shift keys.
To switch between keyboard for currently selected input language use
Ctrl + Shift keys.
