BACKGROUND

In today's knowledge society, the access to information is key to
Socio-Economic growth. The Creation of useful and relevant content in local
language is not enough. It is important that this content is presented to the
end user in the format most comfortable to them. The digital technology for
storage and dissemination of content is extremely dynamic and has opened up
many new possibilities for making content accessible to all in their preferred
format. However, convertibility, adhering to standards like the UNICODE,
adaptability to various devices are the key challenges for realizing the full
potential of this technology.

DAISY Consortium was formed in 1996 and has developed standards for accessible
digital content. The consortium has also facilitated development of tools for
production, distribution and playback of digital content in the user preferred
formats. DAISY Consortium members from all round the world
have implemented these standards to provide accessible content services in
their countries and are moving steadily towards formation of global accessible
digital library. Leading experts from all over the world are getting together
to share their knowledge in this International DAISY Technical Conference.
