There is a way to get around it. It happend with my N97 mini as well. Install fring and then use skipe after that. The trouble with skipe is that it assumes that you are using a 3G network in transfering your voice data. In places like the US, Nokia models don't work with 3G network and thus the other person cannot hear you. When you install fring, it unpacks a peace of voice over internet software which in-turn can be used by skipe over the GSM or WIFI. I didn't have to do it with my N82, but for some reasons had to do with my N97.
