Vision no barrier for true achievers

Visually-challenged makes it big as personality development counsellor

Differently able:Syed Mohammad Noor Shakir conducting a personality
development session at Dr. AER MBA College in Tirupati on Monday.

TIRUPATI: He ignores people who blame corrupt politicians for
backwardness and lays stress on empowering the human resources to
propel India towards becoming a developed nation. Despite possessing a
great vision for the country, the world says that he is ‘lacking
vision'.

Yes, the MBA-turned-personality development trainer is
visually-challenged. After blindness totally engulfed his eyes when
glaucoma struck him at the age of five, Syed Mohammad Noor Shakir
dared to overcome his disability to see the world through his ‘mind's
eye'.

Shakir, a native of Tirupati, completed his graduation at SV Arts
College before going on to do business management at SV University in
2001. He became the first visually-challenged to finish MBA in Andhra
Pradesh.
After working in a private firm and as a college teacher for a couple
of years, he decided to be on his own and saw ‘personality
development' as an option to quench his thirst for entrepreneurship
and as well contribute on a large scale to the nation.

While seasoned trainers rake in the moolah by lacing their passionate
speech with witty one-liners and gingering up the show with practical
tips, this Hyderabad-based Guru is reckoned as the youngest achiever.
He has conducted several sessions in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore
and Kochi.

Shakir got into the Limca Book of Records in 2002 for transcribing the
holy Qur-an in English Braille. “I presented the first copy to the
then President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who asked me to read out the first
few lines,” Shakir told The Hindu.

Well, does blindness make him the preferred choice? “No. The
self-confidence that grew as a result of my blindness is my Unique
Selling Proposition (USP)”, he clarifies. Even after a hectic day-long
session for Dr. AER MBA College, he did not appear exhausted. As
Shakir believes, the world respects only achievers.
