About the event
Earth Day is being celebrated all over the world on April 21nd with
the main objective of inspiring and creating responsible actions
leading towards environment
conservation. The environment has undergone rapid changes due to human
actions thus posing a risk to all forms of life on earth. One of the
most vulnerable
group to the impacts of climate change, global warming, environment
disasters are the young children and the youth groups. In such a
scenario, it is imperative
to create awareness about these cross cutting issues amongst the young
populace and also to build their capacities to deal with these
changes.
With these core objectives, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)
has been celebrating Earth Day since the year 1996 with the main
target group of students
and youth groups. The activities are built around a theme to generate
awareness across a range of environmental issues. The United Nations
has declared
the year 2011 as the "International Year of Forests" to sensitize the
mass about the issues of biodiversity, indigenous tribe, people. Thus
the theme of
TERI's Earth Day 2011 celebrations is "Forests for our Future".
Following activities will be conducted as part of Earth Day 2011
Inter School Debate
Theme: Access to energy and human development are two sides of the same coin
Date for Zonal Debate: 13 and 15 April, 2011
Class: 11 � 12
Inter School Quiz
Theme: Energy, Climate Change and Forests
Date for Zonal Quiz: 13 and 15 April, 2011
Class: 8 � 10
Photography Competition
Theme: Grey and Green ('Grey' stand for concrete and 'Green' for green
cover in the city)
Class: 9 � 12
Entries are invited from 2 teams per school
Last date for sending the entries: 11 April 2011
Inter School Dance Competition
Theme: Expressions of nature
Class: 4 � 7
Date of Preliminary Round: 19 April 2011
Prize Distribution Ceremony
Date: 21 April 2011
Venue: Silver Oak, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road
