Geetha, Twice I have recovered a corrupted word or excel file the following way. I use office 2003 and windows xp, do not know if it would work for other versions.
When we are editing in an existing excel or word file, it creates temporary files in the same folder the names of which start with ~ and has extension as .tmp. I believe these are the various versions either windows/office creates while you edit and save. You can see these files if your explorer settings in the folder options>View tab is set to show hidden files. When you close the file you were working on, these temporary files automatically get deleted. Once my computer crashed, and when it restarted, my file I was working on wont open. But these ~ files were there, which were similar in size as the original file. I renamed one removing the ~ and changing its extension to .doc/.xls, then opened it, and I was smiling. I checked the rest of the ~ files, and found the version which had most of my work. See if this helps you.
