Making movies and documentaries accessible using Text to speech
technology.
Background and Rationale:
Individuals with blindness and low vision have very limited access to
visual
media such as movies and documentaries. These need to be described or
narrated, to make them accessible. Availability of this kind of material
is
very limited and almost non-existent in regional languages. Individuals
with
blindness and low vision are almost unable to watch any foreign film,
since
not only are they not described, but the subtitles can't be read aloud.
Making video's accessible today, is quite costly, and time consuming.
Given the target population it may not always be commercially viable for
the
makers to justify the costs.
Solution:
(Note: see below for links to download sample narrated short animated
film,
by Pixar.)
Making foreign films accessible:
Most blind and persons with low vision, use screen reading software to
access their computers and the internet. Every computer today running
Microsoft windows comes with a free text to speech (TTS) engine, which can
read aloud any given text into spoken English.
The KM player, is a versatile open source media player which can be
downloaded here:
http://kmplayer.kde.org/
It can play any media file, and has the in built feature of reading text
from subtitle files aloud, using the Microsoft TTS engine. One can also
install other TTS engines available on the market for better TTS quality.
These TTS engines can also read out foreign text and speak them in various
other languages besides English.
Download the subtitles for any film easily in any language of choice.
These are available free of charge on the internet.
Video description and narrated movies:
Using the same feature of KM player, that is the ability to read out text
from the subtitle file, using a TTS engine. A subtitle file can easily be
created, with text only appearing when something needs to be described or
narrated for the blind or people with low vision. This method of making
video material accessible is much more cost effective, less time
consuming,
and can make the videos accessible in whichever language one can find a
TTS.
Sample demonstration:
We have created just one such sample demonstration so that you can
yourself
test the immense potential of this project.
We narrated an Oscar winning animated film by Pixar, called 'For the
birds".
Synopsis of the film:
One by one, a flock of small birds perches on a telephone wire.
Sitting close together has problems enough, and then comes along a large
dopey bird that tries to join them. The birds of a feather cant help but
make fun of him-and their clique mentality proves embarrassing in the end.
What has gone into making this film accessible:
1. KM player
2. TTS engine from Ivona Jennifer, and Loquendo Simon.
3. A Text file with the narration.

s%20simon.wav
Sample 2-
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3830724/TTS-videoDiscriptionProject/for%20the%20bird
s%20jennifer.wav
You will only need media player to play these files. They have been
recorded
in .wav format in real time.
The original file is available here-

Appreciate your Feedback, comments or suggestions. You're also welcome to
the video and text file with the narration in case you wish to take KM
player for a test drive.

If you use ms word 2003, you will find it under insert menu, references
submenu. It's a multipage dialogue box. Press ctrl+tab for table of
contents. Here you will find the various options available. If you accept
all the default options, you will have a table of contents with both
hyperlinks and page numbers based on the headings. Just make sure your
headings are well organised.

Hi Friend
JAWS 12 is very better than JAWS 11.
JAWS 11 is not compatible with many latest softwares like Windows 7,
Microsoft Office 2007, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox etc.

It depends on your network too. I had an issue when I was using GPRS that
pages did not load due to slow connection but 3G did work well for me.
