ear Accessindians We are happy to inform that we have developed a software for Android Cell phone ebook reader which is multilingual like Tamil,Hindi besides English. All languages that are available in espeak can be read. We have used Tamil and Hindi fonts only now, which is not required for the visually challenged. Any number of languages can be heard but you can see only Tamil,Hindi and English fonts. This software is named as N_CAN Reader It is only a beta version we request accessindians to test the software and give feed back to improve it. We can add any number of languages . We are ready to offer our source code to any one interested any interested computer science student or entry level programmer can contact us we will train them in adding new features and languages The present cost of Android phone is around Rs5800/ onwards Android for Visually Challenged persons. In order to make Android accessible for Visually Challenged persons Talkback and TTS_engine (SVOX or eSpeak) have to be installed. All the Android installation files will have the extension .apk . Talkback is a screen reading software (other alternatives are kickback and soundback). The default TTS_engine will be SVOX which is a Google's engine. It sounds pretty good, but the languages supported by SVOX are limited. All the above applications can be obtained from http://code.google.com/p/eyes-free/downloads/list eSpeak.apk can be obtained from thirdeyetvg.com[updated version will be uploaded soon], for now it can be downloaded from android market. Note: softwares from android market can be downloaded only from the android devices. eSpeak in Android supports various Languages like Tamil, Hindi, Hungarian etc. After installing eSpeak (or SVOX) and Talkback the android will be accessible. Choose Menu->Settings->Voice input & output->Text-to-speech->Default Engine settings and set the default TTS_engine. The site, http://code.google.com/p/eyes-free/downloads/list has various Accessibility applications like TalkingDialer, EyesFreeShell etc. TalkBack has an Accessible touch based keypad which allows us to type with audio feedback in the Touch screen. The tutorial is added at the time of installation. n_can Reader: This is an assistive software application for Android. It is an accessible multilingual Text Reader with Tamil as the default language. It allows the Visually Challenged persons to browse for text files and open them to hear the contents being read. It allows various degrees of navigation. Features: It splits long files into pages for easy reading. Self explaining menus. Change of Language at any time. For now: Tamil, Hindi and English. Multiple text encoding support. Multiple degrees of navigation with navigational keys. Help: Use up/down keys to navigate by sentences. Use right/left keys to navigate through pages. Use centre key to stop reading. Hold down centre key to read the current page. Hold down call button to read all the pages from the current page.
