I am interested in hearing news about this lecture, though I can't attend it
myself, due to other commitments and my being situated in pune city.

We work a lot with visually impaired young children, who show signs of
mental disturbance due to various environmental factors: isolation, no
friends for play, no play, adjustment to the disability is low in the
family, disappointment, bitterness, etc. in the family, family conflicts,
not giving enough care, neglect, etc. etc.

One particular young and strapping boy, who should have access to
friendships and play, was pushed to voice hearing and other breakdown of
self. He was given invasive treatments by doctors such as shock and
medication. We were shocked. Instead of understanding the symptoms as caused
by the seriously deprived family environment, he was treated with anti
psychotic medication.

We work for the human rights of persons living with psychosocial
disabilities. We are very much against over medicalisation of psychosocial
problems, and the use of inhuman degrading treatments like shock.

My response comes from this background, as someone who has survived acute
depression, as well as the mental institutions when very young.
