In case of using insert key in order to be able to check the battery status, only caps key, which turns into insert key after changing the keyboard layout to laptop will work, the regular insert key will not work in this case.
As far the battery status is concerned, try checking whether battery status is enabled on the taskbar from the control menu or not.
