My cell was stolen in Geneva, about 10 days back. I filed an FIR in Geneva, but did not deactivate my SIM. I assumed that no one would make calls on a stolen cell phone. I was wrong. Yesterday, to my shock, I got a bill for Rs. 1 Lac from Vodafone, my service provider.
When travelling, or when not using the phone while out, keep phone in a safe place. When travelling long distance, or abroad, take out the SIM card and leave it in a very safe place. Always carry cell phone in the pockets, or on your person. If stolen or lost, immediately inform the service provider. (I informed only the next day.) Be extra careful in crowded areas, where pick pockets abound today, in most parts of the western world. I came back thinking that India is safer today than most parts of the western world.
