The desktop keyboard layout will continue to function even after selecting laptop keyboard layout but in order to be able to use laptop keyboard layout, you'll have to choose the same. So once you've changed the keyboard layout to laptop, and attach a USB keyboard, you won't require to switch back to desktop keyboard layout.
