India's first sign language training Centre

New Delhi: The country's first sign language training and research centre 
devoted to the hearing impaired was inaugurated by HRD Minister Kapil Sibal at 
the IGNOU campus here on Tuesday.

Govt.: Special teachers for disabled kids

The city government and MCD on Monday assured the Delhi High Court that 
specially-trained teachers would be appointed for differently-abled children in 
all primary schools across the Capital.
The court was informed that they were already in the process of being 
recruited. The government told the court that Delhi Subordinate Services 
Selection Board (DSSSB) had advertised for recruitment of 858 special educators 
to teach differently-abled children in its schools.

Centre proposes to merge rural and urban health missions

The Centre proposes to merge the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and the 
yet-to-be-launched National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) in the 13th 
Five-Year-Plan period. The two ambitious Missions will be separate entities in 
the upcoming 12th Five-Year-Plan period, after the launch of the urban health 
mission, but subsequently merged.

India 'close to wiping out polio'

India has "never been closer" to wiping out polio, India's health minister has 
declared as he marked World Polio Day.
There have been no new cases for more than nine months, making it the longest

'Poor awareness of eye ailments'

HYDERABAD: A large number of visually impaired people are suffering from the 
ailment due to lack of awareness about eye disorders and shortage of trained 
ophthalmologists, said D Purandeswari, minister of state for human resource 
development (HRD). Speaking at the launch of India Vision Institute (IVI), a 
training and research centre in eye care, here on Tuesday, she said that the 
medical condition impacts the country's GDP.

Eye camp to mark World Sight Day

AHMEDABAD: Eyes of 350 people were checked as part of an eye check-up camp held 
on Saturday and Sunday to mark the World Sight Day earlier this week. The camp

Reinstate visually impaired typist, court tells college

A visually impaired college administrative employee, who was dismissed from 
service, has been reinstated by the Bombay High Court. In an order on Monday, 
the court directed that the employer, Chetna College in Bandra, take back 
Nilima Surve in the same position.

Govt. regulations set afire by visually impaired protesters

AHMEDABAD: A group of around 500 members of the visually impaired people's 
group called Akhil Gujarat Netrahin Jagruti Sangh burnt copies of a Government 
Regulation (GR) on Thursday evening in front of the Town Hall in the city. The 
group of visually impaired people was protesting against the GR which sidelines 
differently-abled people in the recruitment for the post of Vidhya Sahayaks 
(assistant teachers).

Soon, Sanchi will become disabled-friendly

Sanchi, the world heritage site, about 56 kms from the state capital, will soon 
become the first barrier free site in the world for physically challenged

The Delhi Government has decided to provide free travel in air-conditioned 
Delhi Transport Corporation buses plying in Delhi and the National Capital

Man on wheelchair invents disabled-friendly cars

Erumeli: An accident in 1998 altered the course of Biju Verghese's life, 
confining him to a wheelchair forever. 13 years on, Biju still battles the 
demons as he recollects that fateful accident. But the 38-year-old electrician 
from Kerala's Erumeli town didn't let despair defeat him. Instead, he picked up 
the pieces and toiled away hours in a thatched roof workshop to create a 
retrofitment kit for his car that would give him that much-needed mobility.

Film sparks call for revision of laws By Kim Rahn

A movie currently running in cinemas is sparking a growing call for the

 Peru: Voting Rights Victory for People with Disabilities

(New York) - Peru's decision to restore voting rights to thousands of people 
with disabilities is an important step toward ensuring their full participation 
in society, Human Rights Watch said today.  More than 23,000 people with mental 
and intellectual disabilities had been excluded from the voter registry for the 
2011 presidential elections in April and June based on previous government

320,000 Disabled Chilren Live In Poverty And Welfare Reforms Would Make It 
Worse - New Report

4 out of 10 disabled children live in poverty which is worse than the overall 
child poverty rate of one out of three children, according to a new report by 
the Children's Society.  The charity also warned that the government's welfare

Disabled couple's horrific death

Elderly KwaZulu-Nata couples were murdered at their home on Saturday.
Wheelchair-bound pensioner Soodama Ramlall, 81, and his partially-sighted wife, 
Bhana, 70, were callously attacked by robbers, who fled with a Sony 
Playstation, a DVD player and jewellery. Soodama, found on his bed, was gagged 
and hit on the head with an ornament.

rights, UNICEF said today as a key report was presented to a committee of the
