I am using Dell Inspron 6400 laptop with WinXP.
I tried the method as told by you but didn't get success in turning off the
monitor.
Kindly try to guide me if there is any other way available?

Hello,
To turn off monitor, just switch to projector from your laptop. The
laptop will try to search the projector but it'll not get hence, your
laptop will show the message like, 'the projector not found'
something... and will say still you want to keep the settings? in the
dialog just say yes and the monitor will turn off. To turn on again,
switch to monitor.
You can switch to projector by pressing FN+1 of the function keys (F1,
F2 etc) just search wich function key applys to your laptop.
