They have to either depend upon their sighted friends or colleagues or the Waiter for reading out the list of items available in the restaurant. The inaccessibility of menus creates a situation of dependence and because of this visually impaired persons are not able to enjoy the eating out experience. Few top-of-the-line restaurants now keep Braille menus which is of great help to blind persons who are Braille literate. Instant reading systems based on the mobile camera and the OCR technology are also available for reading printed material instantaneously but they are beyond the reach of most visually impaired in India due to their high cost. This book is an attempt at providing a solution to this problem. We have compiled the menus of some of the most popular restaurant chains in India and converted them into accessible format. This information is being made available in DAISY Talking Book format and as an easy to navigate text file. Persons with blindness, low vision or any other print disability will be able to easily look up the menu of their favourite restaurant independently. They can choose to read it on their mobile phones sitting in the restaurant or check it out on the computer in the comfort of their homes before calling the restaurant for home delivery. Organizations for the blind may print the text file in Braille and provide it to persons who need it. It is understood that menus of restaurant chains across India are largely the same. There may be slight variations in price and changes in the items as per local taste but we are sure that this guide will still be very useful. We understand that this guide will have to be updated at regular intervals and many more such guides may have to be prepared to cover other restaurants. Till the time Braille menus become very common and instant reading systems become affordable we hope that other organizations will take up similar initiatives. For the purpose of navigation, the restaurant of each menu has been treated as a chapter and the different food categories (such as starters, main course) are its sub-sections. If you are reading this on a DAISY player, then you will find all the restaurants at Heading level 1 and its sub categories at level 2. If you are forced to read it on a MP3 player then just navigate using the tracks. Each track is a sub-category of a restaurant. This Guide is updated October 2011 as per information available on the internet. Hope you enjoy using this guide! The inaccessibility of DTH service creates a situation of dependence and because of this visually impaired persons are not able to enjoy television as much as they would like. In a few countries voice enabled set-top boxes have been developed which provide accessibility to the print impaired users. We would like the dTH services to incorporate accessibility into their system soon. To help in the interim, we have compiled the information of all the major DTH service providers. All effort has been made to collect accurate data but we understand that new channels are frequently added by the DTH services which may change some of the information given in this guide. However, we are hopeful that this guide will be of great help to visually impaired users of different DTH services. This information is being made available in DAISY Talking Book format and as an easy to navigate text file. Persons with blindness, low vision or any other print disability will be able to easily look up the channel list of their DTH service provider independently. They can choose to read it on their mobile phone, CD player or check it out on the computer in the comfort of their homes. Organizations for the blind may print the text file in Braille and provide it to persons who need it. For the purpose of navigation, each DTH service has been treated as a chapter and the different channel categories (such as sports, news etc. are its sub-sections. If you are forced to read it on a MP3 player then just navigate using the tracks. Each track is a sub-category of a DTH service provider.
