Subject: Request for information

Hello all,

It was nice meeting many of our access indian friends at Trivandrum
recently. Posting this through Geetha as my new email id is still pending
approval. Please feel free to share any information nationally or concerning
your state. Disability information, again, need not be limited to visual
impairment alone. Kindly send your replies to:
[email protected]

Thanks

Justin

Samarthanam is glad to start a disability helpline. This would be
inaugurated on December 10th, 2011. This helpline is geared toward providing
information on disability to parents, teachers, general medical
practitioners, rehabilitation workers, disabled people themselves, and the
community in general.

Our call centre executives, initially, would be in a position to answer
callers' questions regarding special schools and organizations working for
disabled in Karnataka.
Gradually, we would like to collate data on employment opportunities,
resource persons, and all relevant information in other states too. We here
by request you to answer the following questions.

Frequently asked questions for Disability Helpline 1. Could you please give
us the names and details of non governmental organizations in your state
working in the field of disability (for the blind or otherwise):
Name of the organization
Contact details
Mail id
Contact person
Area of work
2. Would you please give us information on disability resource persons in
your state:
Name of the person
Area of specialization
Mail id
Landline /mobile
Organization
3. Are you aware of any schemes, currently operational nationally or
regionally, that would be beneficial to the disabled?
4. Can you share any available statistical data relating to the disabled in
India and/or your state?
5. What are the services that the disabled can avail of from the central or
your state government?
6. Any scholarships in the field of education (primary or higher) that the
disabled community can avail of?
7. Are you aware of any rewards or recognitions that the disabled are
entitled to nationally or regionally?
8. Are you aware of any "reasonable accommodations" that the disabled can
avail of?
Wikipedia defines reasonable accommodation as an adjustment made in a system
to "accommodate" or make fair the same system for an individual based on a
proven need. Accommodations can be religious, academic, or employment
related and are often mandated by law. The blind candidates using the
services of a scribe to write their exam is an example of a reasonable
accommodation.
9. What are the various concessions available to the disabled?
10. Any empowerment, career guidance, and employment resources available to
the disabled?
11. Are there any recreational facilities that are made available to the
disabled?
12. Can you highlight the various loans and/or financial assistance programs
with regard to purchase of assistive devices, education, self employment or
in any other field?
13. What are the issues that are still unresolved in the field of
disability?
14. Would you like to share any other information that would be beneficial
to the disabled community and/or the blind?
