The Bangalore unit of Navaratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) has
received the 'National Award for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities
(2011)' under the Best Employer category.
Anil Kumar, BEL Chairman and Managing Director, received the award from Mukul
Wasnik, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, and Napoleon,
Minister of State, Social Justice and Empowerment, at a ceremony held in New
Delhi on December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
According to a statement from BEL, persons with disabilities constitute 2.75
per cent of the workforce at BEL's Bangalore Complex. The company management
has taken several welfare initiatives to empower them, it said.
These initiatives include: a grace time of 5 to 15 minutes to report for duty
and to sign off for the day; free transport facility or conveyance allowance;
hearing aids, walking sticks and callipers with special shoes. Ramps and
railings have been built at various locations in the complex, the statement
said.
An ATM counter has been opened inside the factory and special restrooms have
also been built. BEL runs a school, Ashankura, for children with disabilities.
An ancillary unit called Vijaya Physically Handicapped Association at the BEL
