Captcha an Introduction:

Those of you that use the internet extensively to search for media like music
files and videoes on the world wide web would have encountered the dreaded
picture varification code called Captcha. To understand what a Captcha is and
what is the need for this on the web read below as I explain and also tell you
how you can overcome the challenge of dealing with Captcha as a visually
challenged person.

What is a Captcha?:
A CAPTCHA is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to ensure that
the response is not generated by a computer. The process usually
involves one computer (a server) asking a user to complete a simple test which
the computer is able to generate and grade that the user is a human and not a
computer generated program that is trying to access the website. In simple
words it is a verification image used on the website to avoid usage of the
services of the website by spammers or fraudalent programmers.

What does a Captcha look like?:
A Captcha is a small square box of an image that has letters or numbers written
in a fancy font style. Even to the sighted user it is not really easy at times
to see what the numbers or letters are. The user has to enter the same letters
or numbers in a text box and submit it so that the website can proceed with the
next ppage or action.

How do I as a visually disabled person deal with a Captcha?:
Most of the websites that have a Captcha and are VIP friendly have an audio
captcha which allows you to listen to the verification code which may be words
or numbers. So, this is one way and you can try it yourself on the site below
which is a password recovery page for Yahoo mail. The page has both the visual
Captcha and the audio Captcha code.

What if the website does not have an audio captcha?:
Here is where you will need to use the help of a sighted person. But not
anymore thanks to this wonderful add on for firefox that I wish to introduce
called Webvism! Unfortunately this option is only available for the firefox
browser and not for Internet Explorer. WebVisum helps blind and visually
impaired people by improving the experience of web browsing. You can read all
about this add on on their website mentioned below, the website is self
explainatory and you can get help to download the add on on the site itself.

Other Notes:

Firefox update and Webvism

Recently, mozilla updated their browser Firefox to version 9.0.1 this has
caused the add on called Webvism to be disabled as it is not compatible with
the new version of Firefox. As we all know that this add on is the only
resource on the web to help the visually impaired solve image captcha on
websites it becomes very important to have it running for us. The Firefox help
and support has provided us with a solution where you can have the latest
version of firefox and still have the add ons that are disabled due to the
issue of them not being compatible. Read the Force add-ons to work by
installing the Add-on Compatibility Reporter section on the link below on their
support website to know more and resolve this issue.
