Folks,
I find a lot of persons who go blind in mid-life facing some unique challenges while contemplating a relaunch of their careers. These persons must have been working in middle or senior management levels when an unexpected illness or accident blinds them and their organization (especially the private sector firms) usually ease them out with due apologies. Now, after picking up screen reader and mobility skills, these persons are often at a loss as to what they can do with their life and career. They may have accumulated domain expertise in functional areas like Finance & Accounting, manufacturing, fabrication, construction, inventory management etc, but, not necessarily the academic qualifications to get them befitting positions in the academia. (For example, an engineer with 20 years experience in electronics production is much better placed to teach as a Professor in the Production dept of an Engineering College, but, may not have the PG or doctorate that is now mandatory for such a position.) Naturally, such persons are averse to changing their domains and starting afresh in new, so-called blind-friendly functional areas like HR, Customer service, or other BPO openings. Usually, such highly skilled persons just go into early retirement, using their new-found computer skills for just surfing the Internet or reading ebooks etc. If one can't afford the luxury of such early retirement, one turns to part-time jobs like home tuitions, counseling, freelance writing or consultancy. I think ERP platforms give such persons an opportunity to restart their careers. One can get trained as a domain consultant in a platform like SAP, Oracle eBusiness suite, Sage etc and then work either in an ERP implementation company or in a user company. Becoming a trainer is also an excellent possibility. Enterprises are going in for ERP adoption across the board and the demand for domain consultants is very high in all the three roles mentioned above. I would like to solicit your views on this subject. List members who are working in any of the three roles mentioned above may kindly share their experiences about the accessibility of their respective ERP platforms. Let us pool ideas and see if professionals blinded in mid-life can look upon this booming area for future careers.
