Hi all,

Most of these burglar alarm systems are semi-accessible. You get a control
console that you install in your bedroom or some other area. As far as I
can tell, arming and disarming the alarm is easy. However, changing the
programming of the alarm could be tricky. If you are familiar with
computers, you can use a rs232 cable and try to get an alarm that has a
serial port in the console. Plug the cable into the serial port and the
other end into your computer and then use a terminal emulator to program the
alarm. I have not had any direct experience with this.

Be warned, when you try to purchase such systems from vendors, they will
have no clue about any of this. You will have to check it yourself. Your
best option is to ask for a demonstration of the equipment.

When getting cameras placed, be careful about lighting. You need to insure
that the lighting is adequate for the camera.
