Dear Vamshi, DAISY is the name of a standard, a set of guidelines for making digital content that is accessible for all including persons with different disabilities. There are 3 types of DAISY books. 1. Audio only: it contains the book recording and a list of chapters & pages 2. Full-text, full-audio: These books contain the complete text of the book, images and complete recording of the content 3. Text only: It contains complete text and images. The audio is not there but it can be read using any TTS and is good for Braille or large print production
In India most NGOs are making audio only books. The books you get from Bookshare are text-only. All these three types of books can be read on computers, mobile phones and special DAISY players like Victor Stream or Plextalk Pocket. Read more on DAISY: http://www.daisy.org/daisypedia/introduction-daisy DAISY books offer several advantages as compared to other formats such as MP3, PDF * ability to navigate directly to any part of the book such as a chapter or a sub-section * ability to jump directly to a page or navigate by pages * facility to rewind & forward exactly by a sentence, word or paragraph * ability to increase or decrease the reading speed (like Jaws speech) * unlimited bookmarks can be placed to remember important locations * resume facility - book opens at the last read position * and many more.... There are many ways and many tools for making DAISY books. For converting text that is already in digital format such as DOC, HTML or PDF the Microsoft Word free add-in Save As DAISY can be used. There are easy to follow videos and step-by-step tutorials on using this simple tool. Please look up DAISYpedia at the link given below or feel free to write to me off the list for more information. http://www.daisy.org/daisypedia/microsoft-word-add-in Prashant -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Vamshi.
