Private sector told to provide jobs for physically challenged

1,200 reserved posts lying vacant for last seven years: Chandy
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has stressed the need for roping in the private
sector to provide jobs for the physically-challenged. Speaking at the 44th
annual conference of the Kerala Federation of the Blind here on Sunday, the
Chief Minister said that the technological breakthrough in the IT and
Communication sectors had opened up new opportunities for the
physically-challenged, including the visually challenged.
The government has initiated steps to make use of the technological
advancement in the administrative sector, he said, and added that the State
had come a long way in e-governance.
Underscoring the need to extended specialised training for the
physically-challenged, Mr. Chandy said his government would take all efforts
to equip the physically-challenged to utilise new opportunities.
The Chief Minister said that there was a backlog in filling up the 3 per
cent reservation posts for the physically-challenged in government
departments. According to him, 1,200 such posts remained vacant. "These
reservation vacancies have not been filled for the past seven years," he
said. All departments have been asked to report the number of vacancies for
the physically-challenged before March 31. "These vacancies will be filled
at the earliest," he said.
Need to expedite work
He said that the government would discuss the matter with Kerala State
Public Service Commission to expedite the procedures.
Mr. Chandy said that reservation and other welfare measures for the
physically-challenged were not extended out of generosity, but it was their
right. "Compassion alone would not do, what we need is actions which would
benefit the needy, he said.
In his introductory remarks, C.K. Aboobaker, president , KFB, called for
setting up a separate department for the welfare of the
physically-challenged. Presently, the department comes under the Social
Welfare Department. A separate department, like in many other States, would
help take up welfare measures more effectively, he said, He also called for
raising the monthly pension for physically-challenged persons to Rs.1,000.
Jose K. Mani, MP, presided. Kottayam municipal chairman Sunny Kalloor, P.
Unnikrishnan, V.K. Anil Kumar, and others spoke on the occasion.

the 44th annual conference and general body of Kerala federation of
the blind was held at kottayam Kerala on 11th and 12th of february
2012. Over 1200 members from different parts of the state attended the
conference. The conference has passed important resolutions to improve
the conditions of the visually challenged in Kerala.
The general body was innaugurated by Mr Umman Chandi the chief
minister of Kerala. In his innaugural address he mentioned that the
government will take necessary steps to speed up the filling of the
backlogue vacancies for the disabled persons in Kerala. He has also
declared that the government will take steps to extend the three
percent reservation of employment to private sector also.
Mr jose K mani the Mp precided over the function.
Earlier on saturday evening the public meeting following the massive
rally was innaugurated by Mr Thiruvanjoor Radhakrishnan The minister
for revenue Kerala. The deligates conference held at saturday morning
was innaugurated by Mr justice K.T. Thomas by donnating his eyes.
Different socio-political leaders attended the conference.
There was a colourful cultural feast led by the KFB arts.
The conference has produced many important resolutions including the
one which asked the government to facilitate free education for all
disabled people.
Earlier in the innauguraal session a complete version of linnux
furnished with malayalam OCRdevoloped by Mr Satyasheelan and master
Nalin Satyan a prodigy for the visually challenged was released by
the minister.
The conference was concluded with the decision to take necessary steps
to improve the association further.
