Yes, decreasing the brightness saves the battery. but as per my knowledge, every laptop has a key combination for turning on and off the display completely. it saves the battery more than from the dimming. Dinesh, I think since you changed the your function key, you could not locate it. I guess it is the Fn key along with any of the function keys from f1 to f12. you can get it by trial and error.
