Hey Jaison, Yeah, I thought so too that the netbook would be the ideal option. You know in companies, here I am talking about the corporates mainly , they have zillion restrictions and policies concerning digital and electronic equipment that is bought in or taken out of their premises or so called technology parks. These policies are mainly to protect their interest of data and client security, which can't be questioned. At the same time, their employees use scribble pads, notebooks and diaries to maintain or note any data or instructions that might need reference in the future. These items go unchecked out of the premises, tomorrow someone can just write the stuff and smuggle out data or client records and later get it in a digital format. So it is logic redefined for all of us isn't it? For a visually impaired, the only flexible way to take notes is by digitalization of data and information and this can be accomplished if we are allowed to use tools like the voice recorder or a netbook.
I am not sure if I was trying to make a point in this email or just express my view. Take it as you may, I complete 1 year with blindness as of March 29th 2012. Thanks for sharing your experience and ideas on the subject. I do understan your situation. I too has faced such situations. As you did:) I also used to record classes. But it has limitations as you said. I have used my mobile to take notes. But it too has its limitations. At present, I am using net book to take notes. At first, it was very difficult to listen to screen reader and to the class at the same time. But now, I can take notes with out jaws. I think, Tablets like Akash will help you in future. Kindly save your critisism on the same, as it is a pshycological and mental block for me at the time. I seek your tips and suggestions on how to be able to take down notes in a senario where a computer is not accessible to me physically. My focus group and audience from who I need ideas and tips are the visually impaired community. What I believe can be done is as follows: 1. Use your mobile phone's sound recorder to capture the minutes of a meeting, an important lecture or something of grave importance. This is not always a feasible idea, as sometimes you are restricted by policies, while the other times the person delivering the lecture, meeting etc. may not be comfortable with their voice being recorded. 2. Have the notes, lecture, minutes of the meeting recorded by an assistant, colleague, friend etc. on a notepad then have them or someone else convert them into a digital format for you. Again this method also has restrictions, availability of assistance is questionable, so is the time taken to work around the process from the recording to the digitalisation of the notes... I know this is a catch 22 situation for most of us in the visually impaired community, I am looking for ideas outside the box and not trying to focus on the limitations or feasibility of an idea that can add on to what I have already covered above. So, kindly work your grey cells and shoot interesting and innovative ways and ideas to help accomplish the task of taking notes on the go!
