I believe pressing escape key should land you back in the document area where 
you can type further.
If you have to insert another footnote in the matter you have written already, 
word automatically adjusts the numbering.
However, I don't know how to modify/remove an existing footnote.

friends, i want to insert footnote in a large document.  i'm stuck and
cannot proceed after i have gone to insert menu, reference, footnote,
then again footnote.
how to add the reference and where?
how to come out of that portion of  reference to the main text of the document?
how to update the footnotes if i make additions in between?
