Help at hand for visually-impaired of Mumbai
Published: Monday, Apr 16, 2012, 10:15 IST
By Rito Paul | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

When Sushmeeta Bubna reached for a bottle of medicine kept beside her ailing
mother’s hospital bed, the last thing she expected was a sharp rebuke from
the nurse on duty.

“You’ll drop the bottle,” chided the nurse. She said it, because Bubna is
almost completely blind. Bubna is the founder-director of Voice Vision, an
NGO for the visually-impaired. On the occasion of its 12th anniversary,
Voice Vision organised a first-aid training workshop for the visually
impaired at HK Management College in Jogeshwari on Sunday. Approximately 70
visually-impaired people attended the workshop.

There are primarily two ways in which Indian society treats its visually
challenged members, according to Bubna. Either there is not enough concern
and rampant callousness, or there is too much concern, bordering on
condescension. Both are insensitive and hurtful.

“There is this idea that a blind person can’t even help his own self. I want
to challenge that perception. Through this workshop, visually-impaired
people will develop the skills to be independent and productive members of
society,” said Bubna.

Dr Ajay Desai, a director of Life Supporters, said: “We’ve been conducting
such sessions for corporates and educational institutions for the last eight
years. Generally, we have a video that we play where the participants learn
the different first-aid techniques by watching the video. In this case, of
course, that wasn’t possible, so we first play the speech portion of the
video, after which our volunteer doctors assist the participants in actually
going through the various first-aid operations,” he said.

Voice Vision — an organisation that works for the blind — conducted a
first-aid training session for the visually impaired at the H K Institute of
Managament at Jogeshwari on Sunday. ‘The First-Aiders: Helping Yourself &
Others’, was a day-long workshop focusing on basics of first aid and
consequently empowering the visually impaired to not only help themselves
but also tend to others in the hour of need. As many as 50 doctors trained
the 60-odd participants from across the state and neighbouring states.
The participants were taught the first-aid steps that are performed in case
of snake bites, dog bites, bleeding, fractures and burns.A separate session
was also carried out on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), emergency
procedure to assist those suffering cardiac arrest. Mannequins and
audiovisual aids were used to explain the process.
“There is a prior preparation that needed to be done, such as sensitisation
of doctors to deal with the visually impaired. We needed to focus on
accessibilty in order to ensure that the training was a success. It was very
touching to see both participants as well as volunteers to take back with
them an enriching experience at the end of the day,” said Susmeetha Bubna,
founder director of Voice Vision.

City’s vision-impaired learn life-saving techniques
MUMBAI: At a rare workshop organised by a city not-for-profit, 61
vision-impaired participants were given cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
and first-aid training on Sunday. This is probably the first workshop of its
kind in India.
PRASAD GORI/HT A vision-impaired participant practises CPR on a mannequin
at the workshop on Sunday.
“We wanted to eradicate the myth that the vision impaired cannot help
anyone, and therefore thought the workshop was a good idea” said Sushmeetha
B Bubna, founder director, Voice Vision, the NGO that organised the workshop
that was held at HK Institute of Management Studies and Research in
Jogeshwari.
Among the participants was 21year-old Jay Devendra, who was excited when he
learned how to do chest compressions at the rhythm of 100 per minute.
“The doctors told me that I had picked up the skill easily,” he said,
smiling.
Lifesupporters Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS), a training institute for
paramedic and doctors in emergency medicine, conducted the workshop. “We
brought 30 of our students to help us with the training. We also practised
last week, so that we were able to reach out to the participants
effectively,” said Dr Ajay Desai, director, LIHS.
“People feel that a vision impaired person cannot be of any help in an
emergency, but this workshop has trained us for just that,” said Rajesh
Asudani, 36, a participant.
