Dear All I have seen a lot of traffic and endless discussions about the status of the accessible ATM of Union Bank of India (UBI), Vastrapur, Ahmedabad. To set the record straight here are some key points. 1. We can label UBI ATM as the first fully accessible bilingual ATM. 2. Accessible ATM machines have been deployed by different banks but this particular ATM machine is comprehensive in its accessibility. 3. The ICICI ATM machine which was in Mumbai and Pune deployed in the year 2002 has had 3 language options but it would not be possible for non-ICICI users to access its facilities. What is more it was not wheelchair friendly. 4. The Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) has also deployed an excellent model of a talking ATM machine however the locations are not wheelchair friendly and SCB only offers English to its users. This ATM can be accessed by any bank ATM card users 5. Banks like State Bank of India have come out with some talking ATM machines however as of now access is restricted to only special SBI ATM card holder to trigger accessibility mode. They are soon going to change their policy. 6. The current UBI ATM location itself is accessible for many disabled people as its in the campus of BPA and also has excellent tactile markers and signage. 7. I was part of the XRCVC team that visited the BPA Vastrapur facility and I can say with confidence that it has lived up to the XRCVC ATM accessibility checklist requirements, as almost all the criteria have been fully met. In fact based on the field report that we submitted both UBI and NCR have already implemented corrections on the basis of some of our observation. Good show by NCR and UBI keep it up Infact this will be a model which we will be holding up for emulation as par to the Indian bank association (IBA) ATM accessibility initiative. I think, ICICI have one in Mumbai for several years and someone recently mentioned Standard Chartered has one too. Also, is this completely accessible? I mean for wheel chair users too? I have seen more than 4 ATM machines taling but not fully accessible around Mumbai. For e.g. at Dadar station when you go towards Bhaji galli. Umesha Economics Jun 20 (2 days ago) to VIB-India, accessindia when will we get all the ATMs accessible (talking)??? I really don't understand what is the barrier for the implementation of these talking machines in all the new ATMs by all the banks as many banks are continuously installing new ones. why only one ATM in the premises of an NGO? this step is welcomable but highly inadequate. I heard that the CCPD in one of its judgment directed IBA (Indian Bankers' Association) to install talking ATMs in all the new installations. informed members please enlighten me. However, when informed of the process, it really sounds a herculian task. There are many stake holders involved user representatives, machine manufacturers, Policy makers and bank them selves. To understand more about it, kindly read my posts in response to the mail written by Synoj with Drishti ATM card subject. rgds Umesha Economics Jun 20 (1 day ago) to accessindia how can I access that mail? also among those stake holders, where exactly it is struck?
