I hypothesize that women/girls with disabilities are, statistically, more
volunerable to crimes against women than their able bodied similarly situated
counterparts.
That should make an interesting research proposition whether the above
hypothesis can be empirically verified and whether it holds up to common sense
notion of more volunerability or it is otherwise, or nul hypothesis is proved.
The factors behind all possible outcomes can then be studied.

Subject: [AI] The Hindu : News / National : Hearing-impaired athlete 'raped,'
auto driver held

http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/article3573796.ece#.T-p5p0DOL28.gmail

Nearly four months after a differently-abled teenager was allegedly raped
by a junior doctor in a State hospital in West Bengal's Bankura district,
an auto-rickshaw driver was arrested and remanded in police custody for 14
days on Tuesday for allegedly raping a national-level woman athlete with
hearing and speech impairments, in the State's Uttar Dinajpur district.

"The victim, who has won medals at the State and national level
para-athletic meets, had lodged a complaint at the police station on June
25, that she was raped by an auto-rickshaw driver. Based on her complaint,
Ranjit Das (28) was arrested and produced before a district court," Abhijit
Dutta, the investigating officer of the case at Hematabad police station in
the Raiganj area of the district, told *The Hindu* on telephone.

The police officer said that the 25-year-old victim, in her written
complaint, had alleged that the accused had raped her while she was
returning home in his auto-rickshaw on June 24 evening. She underwent
necessary medical tests and the reports are awaited, the officer has said.

Former Minister and leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Kanti
Ganguly, said that after realising that the victim had hearing and speech
impairments, the auto driver took her to his house and allegedly raped her
instead of dropping her off at her home.

Mr. Ganguly, who is also secretary of the Paschim Banga Pratibandhi
Sammilani - an organisation working for differently-abled in the State,
said that the victim had been honoured by Governor M. K. Narayanan as a
role model for the differently-abled last year.

Stating that the organisation will provide all necessary support to the
victim, he demanded exemplary punishment for the accused.

Earlier, in February, when a 19-year-old teenager was allegedly raped in
Bankura district, the National Commission for Women had taken a *suo
motu*cognisance
of the incident, and sought a report from the State government on the
action taken in connection with the case.
