Amar, Ask dad if you hit real gold i.e18 carat and above and if you hit plated gold will you not get a different sound. I think there is a difference but not enough to make a definite judgement therefore not worth really doing it on your own. Even then please check and revert. Hi Syed Bhaiya and others, Since my dad is into this business, I should share my opinion on this. As far as my experience and my discussions with him goes, there is no way to distinguish between the artificial and real or gold plated jewellery to be specific using the touch and feel concept. Though the weight has some sort of element while deciding, but it cannot be the single factor while taking a call. Even in the case of stones, the jewelers can tell you by examining the weight, shape and size along with other things (but for our purpose we may restrict it to these three parameters), but that requires two things: 1. Very good practice / accuracy, and 2. Regular touch with the market. Specially now a days due to technological developments from a common man's prospective these things are becoming more complex. Precious stone / semiprecious has altogether different ways for examination purpose. Distinguishing between mettles hcan be acheaved to an extent but that too works when it is raw mettle. As far as I know, no such technology in the form of assistive aids exist to assist us in this area. Lets see what others have to say on this. Regards, -- Amar Jain.
