hi dear jyothi and others,
there are number of softwares to convert word and other formats into PDF.
different programs use different methods to do this. among them, I prefer so
called virtual printers. these are the softwares that work like printers by
installing a printer driver but instead of giving print outs on a paper,
produce a PDF document on your hard disk.
among the virtual printers, I prefer and recommend the bullzip PDF printer.
it is freeware, very easy to install and use, has several options like
saving into different formats like PDF, jpg, bmp, etc. the only thing is
that it requires microsoft dotnet framework before the install. you can
convert anything like doc, docX, xls, or any other format into PDF document.
just open the document, give print command (ctrl + P), choose bullzip
printer from the printer list if you have installed multiple printers, and
hit enter. another dialog pops up. if you just want a PDF document and don't
want other options, just hit another enter on this dialog. the document will
be created and saved in a particular folder with the same name as that of
the original document. it is lot easier than what pranav lal has suggested.

documents into PDF by simply selecting the PDF in the "save as"
options. You can download it for free by googling.
