Reading other replies, i guess i should explain a little more. Firstly, this is perfectly normal, nothing abnormal in it.
When on a call the phone screen either has the keypad, or has six buttons. Three on top and three below. The one on top right, is the Speaker option which would have been selected if your speaker starts suddenly mid call. You can simply select and tap it to switch it off. As Rahul said, you can simply pull the phone away and take it back to your ear. It is the fastest way to get back to handset mode.
