The 6th World Dwarf Games began Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Michigan

for dwarfs in the world. The games go on all day through August 10.

EAST LANSING, MI — With smiles and cheers, more than 400 athletes from
17 countries walked the track surface of Ralph Young Stadium at
Michigan State University to commence the 30th World Dwarf Games.
The games consist of 14 sports including archery, badminton, power
lifting, floor hockey and basketball. The games go through August 10.
The games have been called the premiere athletic event for people with
dwarfism. Many of the best dwarf athletes will go on to compete in
the Paralympics.
With world class athletes attending, competition is stiff. No team is
more serious than the Australians.
"We have put a hell of a lot of training as a team into the
competition," said Sam Millard, the Australian team captain.
They came not just to compete, but to win.
"We are here for pb's (personal bests)," he said, "And if that is good
enough to win than we will be happy."
Even with the competitive atmosphere, the games transcend mere competition.
"All of us thought representing our counties in an athletic sense was
impossible," said Millard, who is competing in his second games and
will be a part of the Australian basketball team and a doubles
badminton team.
The games give Millard and everyone else participating that chance as
well as a vacation from their everyday lives.
"No one is staring and making comments, and to not have to think about
those things for a few days is nice," he said.
Arunachlam Nalini of team India echoes those remarks.
"In India we are seen as a different species, people ridicule us, and
they don't understand," she said.
"I am so excited to be around people who are the same as me. I never
want to leave."
Admission is free to the events. Many of the competitions will be held
on MSU's campus, while swimming events will take place at the Mason
High School Aquatic Center in Mason. Learn more about the games and
the schedule on the 2013 World Dwarf Games website.
