I don't confess to be an expert in this area but publishers sell rights to
their printed and audio versions of their books separately. The perception
of most publishers is that there is not much demand in India for audio
versions of unabridged titles. This may be statistically true as well. Not
many sighted people even know about books being available in audio format.

When I was living in India, I was really struggling to legally buy audio
books. None of the book stores carried any decent collection of audio books.
They would procure them for you at an inflated price. The only reasonable
option I found was audible.com. although Audible has over hundred thousand
titles, only a small minority of those are actually available if you use an
Indian debit or credit card to pay for the titles. Again, this is because
Audible and audio book publishers buy distribution rights for only certain
countries.

Just my two cents worth...

Kiran

It is a wonderful endeavour to have books in Indian languages. However, the
collection of English fiction is small right now. But, if we do get the
opportunity to buy our audio books right here in our own country, it would
definitely widen the scope for so many otherwise unread authors to be read.

What are the possibilities of making international authors available? I know
there is a lot that goes into the entire process of making a book available,
but can't those publishing houses which do publish international authors
make it possible for the books to be produced in audio? This is a question
springing out of relative ignorance of how the industry works, and a genuine
curiosity to know more.

I have also read Bengali audio books from BooksTalk. They donated all those
Bengali books to our organisation, Blind Personhs' Association. They are of
excellent quality. I don't know why they are not producing anything in
Bengali. I mailed Zende on it, still nothing yet in Bengali.
