Experience shared by Bhavesh Patel who is blind.

As a part of Diwali celebration, our HR had announced Rangoli competition
in the office. Everyone became excited and started thinking for ideas of
how uniquely can they draw rangolis. This made me think of how I can
participate in such competition, as I had never drawn or had never touched
a rangoli ever in my life. I told my colleagues that I also need to
participate in this competition.

Since I am a person with visual Impairment, I was a little worried that
how will I be able to do the same. However at the same time I was
confident that BarrierBreak has never run out of innovative ideas when it
comes to equal participation of persons with disabilities in any
activities. And it is true indeed! One of my friend suggested me to make
the outline of rangoli using clay. I became very happy upon hearing this
and immediately decided to make rangoli of a flower.

On the next day we had rangoli competition in the office. We’d bought all
the necessary equipments for rangoli. Rather as being a competitor, I was
excited of being a participant in the competition. During the competition,
I recalled my school days when I used to make different things during my
pottery class.

In the competition, I had made a flower containing shades of red, black
and green colors respectively. We put seeds of orange and yellow pulses
for shades. Guess what? We used daals of different colors which can be
touched. My colleagues helped me to identify different colors of clay and
daals.
I made 4 lamps which we put around the flower. Once the rangoli was made,
I was told to write my name besides the rangoli. We made the letters of my
name using clay which could be touched. Once the competition got over,
everyone saw the rangoli and liked it very much.

There is a saying “we never know until and unless we try”. My above
experience just brings that in to a reality. An innovative thinking can
lead to different ideas.

Thanks & Regards
