Hi, You may want to consider the newer camera based image acquisition solutions such as the pearl from freedom scientific, the Kurzweil 1000 and the solution from vision aide. I used to recommend going with Abbyy FineReader but no longer do so because I have encountered several image where FineReader does not extract the text because it treats the image like a picture. Blindness specific solutions extract all the text from a document. Mind you, I have not tested Omnipage from Nuance which may do a better job at this.
If you want to go with a flatbed scanner, go with scanners from Plustek which are meant for text and are sturdy. Cannon scanners are good and are the way to go if you want flatbed scanners with portability.
