Hi,

Several options are now available.

For writing Math

1. Writing complete words for the symbols takes up sometime. If you
want to continue with this approach, however, you can use autotext to
speed this process. I personally wouldn't recommend it for all
symbols. There are several symbols that are easier and quicker to
insert than typing out the complete word. And of course, it's better
presentation that way.
2. if you have sometime, you might want to consider learning LaTeX.
LaTeX is a typesetting language that allows composing Mathematical and
scientific documents. An easy approach is to learn the Mathematical
keywords of the language, and use Math Type from Design Science to
write your documents. So basically, you can write Math using LaTeX,
convert it to MathType, and then format the rest of the text using
standard word processing features.
3. Lean Math is another new software from Design Science. I'm not sure
if they have a stable release yet, but in any case, it should be
available soon. That's another great software worth checking out.

For reading Math

1. Infty Reader is the only OCR software that recognises Mathematical
equations and scientific formulae. The recognition isn't outstanding,
but it's certainly better than standard OCR softwares.
2. If possible, you can request the publishers to provide you LaTeX or
MathML versions of your textbooks. LaTeX files will have to be
converted to MathML (there are several converters which can do this).
Once you have the MathML file with you, you can use math Player from
Design Science to read the text. MathPlayer is a wonderful software.
I'm using this approach at Stanford for my Math and Science classes,
and it's working out really well.

Hope this was helpful,
Best,
