Hi, A couple of questions: What do you intend pursuing here-batchelers or masters? Regardless, have you taken the SATs (for batchelers) or GRE/GMAT (for masters)? Are you a U.S. permanent resident or citizen?
You cannot be issued an F1 visa (student's visa) until you can present the I-20 issued by a school. As far as employment is concerned, you can work on-campus for a maximum of 20 hours a week. You cannot work off-campus while the school is on. You can, however, work full-time during summer or other vacations by using your optional practical training. You are also allowed to stay and work in the States for 18 months after completion of your degree (curricular practical training). This can be extended, especially if you are majoring in a STEM field. If you are not a U.S. citizen, the cost of attendence will almost turn out to be equal for private and state schools. Also remember that several private universities also offer financial aid to international students, though it is very limited.
