It gives me an immense pleasure in letting you know that The Department of Sociology, University of Hyderabad, will be hosting a
special talk entitled: 'New disability mobilities and accessibilities in urban India', to be delivered by Michele Friedner of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Anthropology program, USA. Venue: SAP room of the Department of sociology, 6th-March-2014, Thursday, at 2:30 PM. Abstract This talk ethnographically analyzes the emergence of new disability mobilities and accessibilities in urban India and asks who benefits from them. The category of disability has become a privileged site for the state and NGOs to situate development interventions and for corporations to engage in corporate social responsibility initiatives. These state, NGO, and corporate efforts are directed at a specific kind of disabled individual and are heavily based upon market logics. Utilizing data from an international transportation and tourism accessibility conference held in New Delhi, a technology and disability conference held in Bangalore, and a new accessible taxi service that recently started in Bangalore, this talk critically examines these new mobilities and accessibilities and argues that we are witnessing a new assemblage of state, NGO, and corporation around disability. This talk also pushes analysts and activists working in the arena of disability to be more specific in their treatment of the concepts of mobility and accessibility. **** Medical anthropologist by training, Michele Friedner is interested broadly in the areas of health and bodies, neo-liberalism and new structures of "opportunity," social movements, etc. Friedner is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Anthropology program, and will be joining the faculty of the State University of New York at Stony Brook as an Assistant Professor in the School of Health Technology and Management.
