STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE Bhubaneswar, 1 June Three visually-challenged persons, who failed to receive shelter in the premises of Odisha Association for the Blind (OAB), Bhubaneswar despite intervention of the High Court and direction of the district collector, have threatened to embark on a hunger strike in front of the office of the police commissioner tomorrow. Mr Prakash Kumar Mohapatra, Mr Nilakantha Kalishi and Mr Rabindra Kumar Dalei wrote to the commissioner Dr RP Sharma informing him about their decision for the stir. The trio, who was allegedly thrown out of the premises by some functionaries of the Association, charged that the IIC of Kharabel Nagar police station acted in a callous manner and deliberately overlooked the instruction of the higher-ups including the collector. "Finding no other option, we have decided to sit in a hunger strike against the inaction of the police (IIC of Kharabel Nagar police station) and against the human rights violation. It is lamentable that even after the direction of the collector, Khurda, the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) has failed to provide police protection to us," read a letter by the victimized trio. They informed that the Khurda collector, who had conducted an inquiry following a directive from the High Court, had instructed the DCP to ensure rehabilitation in the Association premises. The collector's orders, however, were flouted. "The collector had directed the general secretary of the OAB to convene a meeting within a month and place the petitions received from various quarters regarding membership, residence and election irregularities for final disposal. She had also instructed that we shall continue to receive shelter in the premises as before and get vocation support and other facilities. The police failed to abide by the instruction of the collector, which left us with no other option but to resort to stir," said Mr Mohapatra. http://www.thestatesman.net/news/57615-visually-challenged-trio-threaten-hunger-strike-after-being-denied-shelter.html And to know how Odisha has fared in implementing PWD act visit: http://www.thestatesman.net/news/57411-disabled-rights-in-state-only-on-paper.html --
