You are right. Sadly it was held for targetted delegates/students. I
would have loved to inform the list earlier but myself got to know at
the 11th hour. Majority of them came, had sumptuous food at 4Star
Hotel and flew back to their respective places. Aah, I also went there
but not as a technologist but as a student/researcher/observer. We
posed questions, and government representatives as usuals ran away
from responding hard questions. For example, to one of my questions,
MS Stuti Kakkar did not find any link between Disability
certification and employment. But she and her department is well-aware
that NGOs have their own stake and could be made silent and convinced
by connivance, but students specially from JNU/DU will always ask
questions which are of serious nature and of greater concern. NGOs
displayed their products and provided justification for their better
marketability. Big players known in the accessible technology arena in
the disability sector, lamented the fact that why persons with
disabilities do not wish to buy products and want technologies reach
them 'free of cost'? They advocated for business model which would
drive innovation. Technology was discussed, its inaccessibility and
way forward was deliberated upon. Apart from galaxy of technology
experts, IITs' professors and NGO representatives , Two responsible
personalities from the government spoke on the occasion, RCI
Chairperson and Secretary Department of Disability Affairs. It was
first innitiative taken by UNESCO perhaps and they will be bringing
recommendations emerged out of the conference in print/electronic
soon. Remember next big 'brainstorming' will be at India International
Centre in Late November.
