BHOPAL: The state capital is home to highest number of disabled
citizens, 84,502 to be precise. Indore stood at second place with a
population of 78,761 disabled people.

Releasing data at a workshop here at Academy of Administration, on
Thursday, census Madhya Pradesh director Sachin Sinha said there are
15,51,931 people with different disabilities in Madhya Pradesh, which
is 2.14% of disabled population of 2,68,10,557 in India.

Comparing to 2001 census, there is a decline of 0.19% in disabled
population in the state. This data is based on 2011 census and is
released for the first time.


Sinha said Jabalpur and Rewa with population of 59,074 and 57,889
people with disabilities, respectively are placed at third and fourth
positions. Sagar is at fifth position with a population 52,576.
Interestingly, Alirajpur, one of most backward districts of the state
tribal district has minimum number of disabled people -10,869.

He said this statistics is based on eight categories, including
visually challenged, people who are hard of hearing or deaf, those
lacking power of speech or dumb, physically disabled people and people
with learning difficulties. Surprisingly, Bhopal stood first in all
parameters.

In visually challenged category, Bhopal has 21,346 citizens followed
by Indore with 16,839 people under this category. Datia is at lowest
level in the state with population of 1,843 people who visually
challenged In all there are as many as 2,70,751 people in the state
with this problem.

In category, with people lacking hearing power, Bhopal again topped
the list with a population of 21,843, while Indore is at second
position with population of 18,915.

Sheopur is at lowest level with population of only 1,748 people with
this problem. There are 2,67,361 people in MP with problems of hearing
power or completely deaf.

In speech-related problems, Bhopal again has highest population of
4,553 people under this category followed by Indore, 3,764 people.
Alirajpur is at bottom with 339 people having speech-related problems.

Bhopal also has highest number of people with learning disability with
the population of 3,917 people. Indore is again at second level with
population of 3, 823 people. Alirajpur is at the bottom with only 403
persons with the learning disability. In all, there are 77, 803 people
in the state with problem of learning disability .

As far as mentally retarded people are concerned, Indore is at the top
position with 1,701 such people. Jabalpur is the second position
having 1,622 persons followed by Alirajpur with only 224 mentally
tretarded people. In all, Madhya Pradesh has 39,513 people with
learning disabilities.
