Welcome initiative. Some universities are already taking some steps in
this regard already. Jamia Millia Islamia, in the refresher course on
human rights, had a session on disability and human rights in India
for which I was invited as a resource person. It was a very
interesting experience for both me as well as the participants who
came from different parts of India, and many of them gave me the
feedback that issues and concerns of disability is something that the
academia needs to be oriented
in.
I think we should revisit the extremely patronizing usage of
'differently abled'. Every human being is different to each other. And
a lot of the disability that people with impairment have to face are
socially constructed. By the use of the patronizing formulation of
differently abled, we help cover-up the societal agency in the
creation of disability.
