I am pleased to inform you all that I have figured out a way-around for selecting the date of travel on IRCTC web interface which is usually inaccessible to all of us in terms of a blank read only field thereby making it difficult to operate with standard navigation command. It's a relatively lengthy explanation. those who prefer the assistance from a sighted person to get their job done, and don't wish to waste their valuable time by reading the procedures may skip these tips. the only thing you will have to compromise is your preferred screen reader if it is anything other than NVDA. and moreover, I assume that you are using Mozilla Firefox for this purpose. if you are using any other web browser, you can try these methods, but I am not sure whether it will work or not. So let's start the process: 1. log in to IRCTC portal by using your account credentials. Please create an account if you do not have one. but here an annoying issue appears: it's none other than entering the captcha. So, in order to enter the captcha, use the well known efficient add-on called Webvisum. First, press Alt plus Control Plus 6 to submit the captcha, and wait for some 30-40 seconds. But no result will be announced afterwards. So, without waiting further, press the command once again, and you will hear two announcements: the first one is of course regarding the message confirming the submission of your captcha. but the next one is the result which will be pasted into your clipboard. You can use insert plus C to check the clipboard contents in NVDA. Note that as long as you don't press the captcha submission command again for the second time after waiting some 30 or seconds, there will be no results! 2. now that you have logged in to your account successfully, you will be straightaway presented with the edit fields where you can input the relevant details, that is, the source station, destination station and date of journey. 3. Please enter the first few characters of the station name in the "from" and "to" field. for instance, type C H E N N for Chennai, M U M B for Mumbai and so on. After entering the initials, press tab to move to the next field. here, the screen reader will say nothing at the first instance. when you press Tab again, it will move to the next field. actually, when you enter the first few characters, say, B A N G, and press tab, the screen reader says nothing. but the result is silently edited as Bangalore in the edit field, and when you press Tab for the second time, it navigates you to the next field. 4. now the date selection procedure comes! here you require to use the NVDA object navigation commands. first, in the read only edit field which is actually the date selection field, press insert Plus Num pad 6 once or twice, when NVDA announces "graphic", press Insert Plus Num pad Enter to activate the object. NVDA says "click". press tab and shift Plus Tab to get back to this edit field again. Please note that whenever you press Insert Plus Num pad Enter to activate the focused object, NVDA should say "Click", and you have to press Tab and shift Plus tab to bring your focus back every time after issuing this command. again press insert Plus Num pad 6 repeatedly untill you hear the month, say, "December 2014 text". There will be two texts between the Month text. now, let me clarify the sequence: if you press Insert Plus Num pad 4 to move to the previous object, NVDA says "text", when you press Insert Plus Num pad 6 to move to the next object, it says "December 2014, text", and when you again move to the next object, it says "text". so it's clear that the Month is sitting between the two texts, right? Please remember that activation of the current object can be performed by using Insert Plus Num Pad enter. so I won't repeat the command again and again from now on. so when you activate the left side "text" of the Month Text, it will move backwards, December, November, October and so on. if you activate the right side "text" of the month text, it will move forward, January, February, March and so on. Choose the appropriate month. and activate that object. again perform the same steps, and when you repeatedly press Insert Plus Num pad 6 to navigate to the next object, you will be presented with the dates, something like 1 text, 2 text, 3text and so on. just activate the object of your choice. after making your desired selection, when you press tab and shift Plus tab to get your focus back to this blank read only edit field, NVDA will announce the date, month and year instead. So, that's it, click on the submit button to get the list of trains. Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in!
