Hi Bhavya, 1. Replying to spam is a bad idea because you tell the spammers that you are actively listening therefore you will get more spam. 2. Spam messages may have tracking code such as web beacons imbedded in them. Opening the message will tell the spammer that someone live is listening. They may contain malicious java script too which may lead your computer to a website serving malware.
There are however several things you can do. 1. Look at spamcop (https://www.spamcop.net/) and similar services. 2. Use a virtual machine and a throwaway e-mail address to work with spam. Ensure that your virtual machine uses opendns which will mitigate the risk of it going to malicious websites. 3. Get hold of a hosting service which lets you host your own e-mail server and play. It is very educational. 4. Read, read and read to ensure that you know what you are doing. Pranav Clean India Campaign: Let us also chip in!
